The Brief
Western Power needed to install a high-voltage cable across a river, running beneath a public footpath bridge in a remote location.
The site had no direct vehicle access and sat above a weir with fast-flowing water making standard boat access impractical. Our role was to provide safe, stable working platforms so the electrical team could complete the installation efficiently and without disruption.

The Challenge
The chosen crossing point sat in a remote riverside location with no obvious access routes.
The river's width and flow rate ruled out boat-based solutions, whilst the position above a weir created additional safety considerations. Equipment and materials needed to reach the site and the installation team required a secure platform to work from whilst attaching the cable to the bridge underside.
The entire operation had to be completed with minimal environmental impact and full safety compliance in swift-water conditions.

Our Solution
Practical Access Planning
Working with Western Power during the planning phase, we mapped out site access and identified the safest approach.
We secured landowner permission for field access and used our 4×4 to transport equipment to the riverside. We deployed a 20m² pontoon system with safety railings, positioned directly beneath the bridge to create a stable working area. Because the river conditions prevented boat access, our in-water operatives entered the water to build and secure the platform. All operatives were swift-water trained, ensuring the work could be carried out safely despite the challenging environment.
Once the platform was secure, Western Power's team completed the cable installation. We provided ongoing safety support and equipment transportation throughout.

The Result
Western Power successfully installed the high-voltage cable.
Our team then dismantled and removed all equipment, restoring the site to its original condition. The project demonstrated how in-water expertise can solve access problems that standard methods can't reach.
With our fleet capability and qualified in-water operatives, we eliminated risk and delivered a solution that would otherwise have been impractical.
At a Glance
- Technical expertise: Swift-water trained operatives, site reconnaissance, access planning, permit guidance.
- Platform configuration: 20m² modular pontoon with safety railings, secured in flowing water above weir.
- On-site support: Swift-water safety cover, equipment transport, platform installation and removal.
- Project duration: 2 weeks from mobilisation through to site restoration.
- Our difference: In-water operatives turned an inaccessible location into a workable site, eliminating the need for complex alternative access methods.
