The Brief
Keystone Ecology needed to complete a full wildlife survey along the tidal section of the River Avon, from Bristol’s Floating Harbour lock to Netham Weir.
The team were monitoring otters and other protected species and had a limited window each day to complete the work.
The survey required a craft that could operate in very shallow water, push up onto muddy banks and support two surveyors using cameras, binoculars and monitoring equipment. The challenge was not only to keep the team safe but also to build a workable timetable around the tides so that the entire stretch could be surveyed without missing key observations.
If the water dropped too low, the lock could not be used, which meant the crew had to be in and out at the right times.

The Challenge
The New Cut is a tidal waterway with shifting depths, exposed mud banks and a narrow working channel. Access windows were tight, and the team often had only one chance each day to get through the lock and complete the route before the water dropped again.
Safety was a priority. The surveyors needed quiet, discreet access so that wildlife was not disturbed. They also needed a boat that could cope with shallow water and the soft edges of the New Cut.
Planning the route was complex, as the distance had to be matched to the speed of the boat and the available tide so that every section could be surveyed without rushing.

Our Solution
Precision Planning
BM Safety worked closely with Keystone Ecology to plan the job from start to finish. We built a timetable around the tide tables so that the team could lock out and back in safely.
Our operatives supported the survey on site and used a lightweight work boat with an electric engine, which gave the surveyors quiet access, ideal for observing wildlife.
The boat was able to drive up onto banks for shoreline checks, and our crew monitored the water levels throughout the day to make sure the return to the lock was safe. We also helped manage equipment loading, launch logistics and safe positioning along the route so the surveyors could focus fully on their monitoring work.

The Result
Keystone Ecology completed the full wildlife survey safely and within the required time frame.
They gathered the observations they needed without disturbing wildlife and were able to cover the entire section of the river thanks to careful planning and on-water support.
This project highlighted BM Safety’s practical knowledge of Bristol’s waterways and our ability to give ecology teams the discreet, reliable access they need in challenging tidal environments.
