Spanning the River Avon
The Brief
Griffiths were tasked with carrying out concrete repair works to the underside of one of Bristol’s busiest bridges.
They needed a stable, load-bearing platform capable of supporting heavy equipment and operatives while maintaining full safety compliance in a tidal and high-flow environment.
The Challenge
The site presented a unique combination of fast-flowing tidal water, a weir, and restricted access.
The Harbour Master required that river access remain open at all times, meaning any platform solution had to be movable in the event of adverse weather or rising water levels. During spring tides, the river’s tidal range exceeds 11.5 metres and in periods of heavy rainfall, flow rates can reach 10 knots. Compounding the challenge, the pontoon system had to be assembled 500 metres away from the bridge before being carefully manoeuvred into position beneath the structure.
Other companies had declined the job due to these constraints, but this is exactly where BM Safety’s in-water expertise and technical access knowledge came into play.

Our Solution
BM Safety designed and delivered a 300m² modular pontoon system, built in three movable sections. This configuration allowed the work platform to be repositioned or brought to safe harbour quickly in the event of changing conditions.
Our in-water operatives handled the assembly, navigation, and anchoring of the pontoon, ensuring stability under load while maintaining the flexibility required by the Harbour Master. We deployed a work boat and safety boat to support operations, enabling safe transfer of personnel and materials from shore to site.
This adaptable solution meant Griffiths could operate safely, efficiently, and without disruption even in fast-flowing, unpredictable waters.

The Result
The project was completed safely and on schedule.
Allowing SAS Rope and Rail to carry out essential concrete repairs to the underside of the bridge without closing river access.
BM Safety’s understanding of tidal behaviour, water flow, and on-water logistics proved critical in delivering a solution that other providers couldn’t achieve.
