The Brief
Amalgam Models was tasked with delivering Illuminated Reeds Symphony, a seven-metre-long floating light installation forming the centrepiece of the newly redeveloped Cardiff canal.
The installation was designed to imitate reeds swaying gently on the water, creating a vibrant, interactive experience that would attract visitors and highlight the regeneration of the city’s docklands area.
BM Safety was brought in to design and deploy the floating platform to the designer’s exact specifications and ensure the installation could be positioned, secured, and maintained safely in a live urban environment.

The Challenge
The site was technically complex:
- A narrow canal section with no direct boat access.
- Public safety had to be maintained at all times in a busy city centre.
- The canal’s restricted width and depth made mechanical manoeuvring impossible.
- The structure had to be stable, discreet, and able to remain in situ for extended display periods.

Our Solution
Bespoke Modular Pontoon System
BM Safety worked closely with Amalgam’s designers and engineers to design a bespoke modular pontoon system tailored to the weight and balance of the light sculpture.
- The pontoons were pre-assembled on the canal edge, then carefully manually manoeuvred into position by our in-water operatives.
- All work was carried out without disrupting public access or damaging the newly finished canal structure.
- Once in place, the installation was secured and stabilised to remain safely afloat throughout the exhibition period.
The project showcased BM Safety’s ability to blend technical seamanship with creative collaboration, supporting designers and engineers with precise, safe and unobtrusive on-water solutions.

The Result
Illuminated Reeds Symphony became an eye-catching, memorable addition to Cardiff’s city centre.
The installation ran successfully for two consecutive years, transforming the canal into a cultural focal point, drawing visitors further into the heart of the city.
For BM Safety, the project demonstrated how our team can make even the most delicate artistic vision safely come to life.
